Background
The Resuscitation Training Centre (RTC) of Caritas Medical Centre was set up in 1996 by a group of doctors and nurses interested in improving the standards of resuscitation. The Centre was made possible with the enthusiastic support of our Ex-HCE, Dr. Helen Tinsley and a grant from Caritas Hong Kong.
Currently, CMCRTC receives great support from hospital senior management, HCE Dr. Doris Tse, CMCRTC Director/COS AED Dept, Dr. Vincent Ho and CMCRTC Advisor, GM(N) Mr. Andrew Yeung.
CMC's Resuscitation Training Centre was set up in response to a perceived need - to upgrade and standardize our staff's knowledge and skills in this area. Many people have worked long and hard to achieve this goal. Our professional trainers are recruited from our CMC staff and other hospitals and organizations in Hong Kong. Their enthusiasm and commitment are highly appreciated. Our service has now expanded to include trainees drawn from both public and private sectors with a range of courses offered, hoping to improve and standardize their skills in resuscitation. After meeting our running costs, resources are channeled back into developing our service further. Through planned activities within our local community, we also hope to raise awareness and skills amongst the general public, in particular school children.
In 1997, BLS instructors were trained and accredited by the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), Canada. Within two years, almost all of CMC's 600 nursing staff were certified in BLS (Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada) and regular annual re-certification programme was in place. BLS training was also provided for nursing staff of other HA and private hospitals as well as our own engineering staff and radiographers.
In 2000, CMCRTC hosted a series of training courses organized by Emergency Care Training (HK), the American Heart Association Hong Kong International Training Organization (ITO). In October 2001, Emergency Care Training (HK) on behalf of AHA signed an agreement with CMCRTC, authorizing the centre as a Training Center (TC). CMCRTC became the first Training Center of the American Heart Association (AHA) in Hong Kong.
